Invisible Diversity: A Story Of Undiagnosed Autism | Carrie Beckwith-Fellows | TEDxVilnius

autism No Comments »

What is autism and why is it difficult to get it diagnosed? In her talk Carrie shares her own personal journey towards diagnosis of autism: why it took 35 years, and what are the root causes for such invisible diversity?

Carrie Beckwith-Fellows is a freelance writer and vlogger from England. She has written for various online publications, including The Huffington Post, Autistica, the National Eating Disorders Association USA and her own blog, where she shares the reality of living with autism and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a complex and life-limiting illness. Diagnosed as autistic at the age of 35 has allowed Carrie to explore the world again from a new perspective. Aware that a late diagnosis can cause issues with identity, relationships and perception, she launched a website that explores the unique post-diagnosis experience to raise awareness and to support other autists diagnosed as adults.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

FAQ’s

Q. Do I need headphones to listen to this recording?

A. No, you do not need headphones. The messages have been embedded in a variety of ways, ensuring they can be absorbed either with or without headphones.

Q. Can I listen while driving or when I’m at work?

A. No. You should refrain from doing anything that requires concentration such as the operation of machinery or driving. This is for your own safety as some people may experience temporary drowsiness. I recommend that you listen while sleeping, relaxing, meditating, or enjoying activities such as drawing or reading.

Q. Do I need to watch the screen?

A. No, you don’t need to watch the screen. The messages are only embedded in the audio recording, so you just need to listen.

Q. Why can’t I hear any talking?

A. This is a subliminal recording, which means the affirmation messages are hidden within the audio.

Q. How do subliminal messages work?

A. Compared to regular audio, the subliminal affirmation messages are recorded at many different frequencies and volumes, therefore you will be unable to hear the messages consciously. Because you are unable to hear the messages consciously, they bypass the part of your mind that analyses information, thus enabling the messages to go directly to your subconscious mind, allowing them to be absorbed as a factual new reality.

Q. Can I sleep while listening?

A. You can listen to this recording whilst asleep or awake, both methods are effective.

Q. How long until I get results?

A. It varies. Some people will only have to listen for a matter of minutes to notice an improvement, whilst others will need to listen for several hours over the course of a few days.

Q. At what volume should I play the recording?

A. At whatever volume you find most comfortable.

Q. What do the messages in this recording say?

Research shows that approximately 40% of us feel very uncomfortable (high social anxiety and social disorder) in social settings. This fear often stems from a false perception as to how we stack up against other people in our appearance or behavior.

Dr. Ellen Hendriksen recently published a book entitled How to be Yourself, which points out that social anxiety usually relates to a concern that we will be “found out” by the other person with whom we are interacting regarding our personal deficit in one or more of the following three areas:

1) Personal appearance—we are not as attractive as we wish, or we have some noticeable anomaly in our appearance;

2) The actual fact that we have social anxiety. We may be drawn into continually asking the question of ourselves, “Do they know I’m petrified and totally unsure of myself?”

3) Our fear of the discovery by the other person that we have insufficient social skills in our speech, our manner and in the content of what we communicate. In blunt language, how long until they recognize that I am boring, dumb or offensive in how I relate to them?

There is a simple and effective tool which can start to lessen this burden, and even work to erase it completely from our thinking patterns as we interact: Meditation.

Which is just the clearing of our minds on a regular basis of all negative thoughts, especially those which focus on ourselves, and our imagined, or at least exaggerated deficiencies in our communication.

Meditation exercises allow us to control what goes through our brains to limit, and eventually, eliminate our social fears from detracting from our relationships.
