Research shows that approximately 40% of us feel very uncomfortable (high social anxiety and social disorder) in social settings. This fear often stems from a false perception as to how we stack up against other people in our appearance or behavior.
Dr. Ellen Hendriksen recently published a book entitled How to be Yourself, which points out that social anxiety usually relates to a concern that we will be “found out” by the other person with whom we are interacting regarding our personal deficit in one or more of the following three areas:
1) Personal appearance—we are not as attractive as we wish, or we have some noticeable anomaly in our appearance;
2) The actual fact that we have social anxiety. We may be drawn into continually asking the question of ourselves, “Do they know I’m petrified and totally unsure of myself?”
3) Our fear of the discovery by the other person that we have insufficient social skills in our speech, our manner and in the content of what we communicate. In blunt language, how long until they recognize that I am boring, dumb or offensive in how I relate to them?
There is a simple and effective tool which can start to lessen this burden, and even work to erase it completely from our thinking patterns as we interact: Meditation.
Which is just the clearing of our minds on a regular basis of all negative thoughts, especially those which focus on ourselves, and our imagined, or at least exaggerated deficiencies in our communication.
Meditation exercises allow us to control what goes through our brains to limit, and eventually, eliminate our social fears from detracting from our relationships.
