What is it like to live with Asperger’s syndrome? Jordan Kamnitzer tries to answer that question in “Perfectly Normal,” this week’s Op-Doc. It’s beautifully directed by Joris Debeij, who frames Kamnitzer’s experiences and ideas with evocative cinematography and editing, giving us a beautiful but challenging glimpse into another way of being.
In a related essay, the writer Eli Gottlieb describes it as “a rare filmic experience of the sensory overload of autism … as Jordan, the articulate middle-aged subject of the film, speaks about his own condition, the music skitters and booms, rapid jump cuts intensify the sense of danger, and in this swelling moment of uncertainty, the viewer experiences a fleeting sense of what it might be like to live in a condition of permanent, anxious neural flood.”
Gottlieb grew up with a severely autistic older brother, but even after 40 years, “find[s] his emotional and cognitive process as fundamentally mysterious as ever. The impenetrability of autism, with its seemingly endless variants and its essential “otherness,” is its hallmark. All this renders Jordan’s testimony that much more useful and intriguing. He is a reporter at a hinge-point of consciousness, able to inhabit his condition while describing it for us — whether we are “neurotypicals” or lodged somewhere on the spectrum — with remarkable precision and insight.”

SUMMARY:
– If you have a tough inner voice constantly judging you super harshly and putting you down, then you’ll be more prone to removing yourself from social situations because you expect to be judged by others just as relentlessly.
– Shy quiet people are just as smart, successful, competent, and interesting as extroverts. The only difference is that shy people might have a hard time talking about what makes them unique, so others don’t get a chance to notice it.
– Being in a large group of friends or acquaintances can be an awkward experience for people who suffer from social anxiety. But still, don’t wait for others to ask how you’re doing, how your projects are going, or what you did this weekend. Take the initiative to tell your friends what’s going on in your life.
– Body language tells you so much about a person. In social situations, people who feel awkward or shy might cross their arms or legs, avoid eye contact, angle their body away from others, stand or sit further away, or lower their head. They might also hide behind their phone or always keep it in hand.
– If you’re shy, you’re probably skilled at declining invitations just to avoid social interaction. You might even come up with excuses or go out of your way to avoid someone or some event. But when you say “no,” you create a barrier that closes off opportunities.
– If you’re out with a group of friends and you’ve said something incorrectly or you think you sounded foolish, it gets that critical inner voice going and you get so caught up in your self-demeaning thoughts that you totally disengage with what’s happening at the present time.
– Overcoming shyness isn’t just about learning to talk to people, it’s also about the basic principle of doing the things you’re scared to do. You learned earlier that a fear of being judged usually plays a big part in being shy.

“Because shyness can grip us in such powerful ways, it’s tempting to think of it as an immutable part of our emotional make-up, with roots that extend far into our personality and perhaps biology – and that we would be incapable of ever extirpating. But in truth, shyness is based on a set of ideas about the world that are eminently amenable to change through a process of reason because they are founded on some touchingly malleable errors of thought.…”

Follow these strategies and learn how to overcome shyness and become more confident in life. Self consciousness can be a major factor and a cause of a lack of self confidence. But, if you don’t start talking to people, you will never stop being shy and awkward. It’s important to practice talking more openly with friends, family and even complete strangers.
This sounds scary at first, but if you want to overcome shyness and social anxiety, you need to put yourself around people. You will get used to it. So give yourself a chance and start saying yes to invitations. This will allow you to be around people and socialize with others who share your interests.
Taking care of yourself can totally boost your confidence! Even just small things, like: showering, flossing your teeth and keeping your nails trimmed can make a big difference in how you feel about yourself. In addition, to gain confidence and self esteem, find something you enjoy and know you are good at. Knowing that you possess some unique quality will help you accept yourself – wholeheartedly.
By practicing the self confidence tips on this list every day, you can slowly overcome shyness and become more confident, until you can publicly display who you are – without fear of being judged.

Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.
It’s a developmental disorder that can be recognized in early childhood. Doctors say there is treatment for autism that can offer many children a normal life.
Dr. Denise Dutchak, a child psychiatrist with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, says autism is a developmental spectrum disorder. It’s made up of a consolation of symptoms, including difficulty with communication, social interaction, and compulsive behaviors. “They can also have what we call stereotypical behaviors. One of them might be spinning in place or hand flapping.”
Symptoms can start in early childhood as young as two years old. “Parents and pediatricians will recognize it early on even before two years of age, depending on how they’re communicating and how they’re interacting,” said Dr. Dutchak.
While autism is a lifelong condition, treatments are available to help children work on their speech, language, social skills, and cognitive development. “They can learn social skills, they can communicate. They can become involved in jobs, have families, and they can function in the main stream,” said Dr. Dutchak.
Doctors say for the treatment to be beneficial, it has to be coordinated with school and home. “It’s essential that they are getting all the help they need in school because they may learn differently. A lot of them may have language impairments so they definitely need their speech and language therapies,” said Dr. Dutchak.
The earlier therapy begins the more overall benefits for the child. Video Rating: / 5

— video script below —
Autism is a disorder that is usually diagnosed in early childhood. The main signs and symptoms of autism involve communication, social interactions and repetitive behaviors.
Children with autism might have problems talking with you, or they might not look you in the eye when you talk to them. They may spend a lot of time putting things in order before they can pay attention, or they may say the same sentence again and again to calm themselves down. They often seem to be in their “own world.”
Because people with autism can have very different features or symptoms, health care providers think of autism as a “spectrum” disorder. Asperger syndrome is a milder version of the disorder.
The cause of autism is not known. Autism lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. There is no cure, but treatment can help. Treatments include behavior and communication therapies and medicines to control symptoms. Starting treatment as early as possible is important.
